Puno

Puno was the center of the Tiahuanacu culture, one of the most important Pre Inca cultures and the maximum expression of the Aymaras people. The legend tells that it was here, at more than 3 500 meters over sea level, where Manco Cápac and his wife Mama Ocllo, ordered by their god, The Sun, emerged from Titicaca lake to found the Inca Empire. Nowadays Puno encloses the richest folklore of the country from La Virgen de la Candelaria Carnival passing through many others celebrations like the Fiesta Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes or the Anniversary of the City to many sightseeing attractive like the impressive Titicaca Lake, the highest navigable lake of the world, The Cathedral, Chullpas de Sillustani, etc. One of the most important islands of the Titicaca Lake is the floating island of Uros. This is more than 40 little islands made of totora, a typical cane from the Andean region, where its inhabitants still continue living like their ancestors did, keeping their manners and culture as one of the first populations of America. There is as also the singular Taquile Island where most of its inhabitants are dedicated to agricultural labors and they have developed a distinctive way of tourism where it is possible to share their daily activities with them.
